| Smartphones Get Memory Boost |
Posted by the editor on June 20th, 2010
Smartphones can increase the life of their battery dramatically, up to 20%, by changing the memory that is being used. Phase change material is constructed of a material that is designed to erase memory when it is heated, and this causes it to use less memory. The change to the memory modules is something that Samsung has announced recently and may be seen as soon as late 2010.
A glass like material is responsible for the phase change material and when heated it turns into two separate forms which has its own resistance to electricity. The chips needed are easy to incorporate into the production phase and this is how a quick release is possible. You will conserve more battery life and this is something that many Smartphone users are looking for.
Data is recorded and erased each time the phone is heated up and this is state of the art technology. Cell phone companies have been exploring material changes for years, and Samsung is on top of the game when it comes to actually incorporating this into mainstream use. PCM is predicted to replace the flash memory in many phones and many other companies are scrambling to get something similar released for their brand of phone.
It is unclear how long it will take the other companies to catch up and release their own version of the PCM, but it will most likely happen in the near future as this technology is becoming more understood and advanced.
